A doji after a quiet week
A doji has an open and a close that are nearly the same, so the real body is a line rather than a rectangle. The word is accurate as soon as that is true. The implication students want — that the market is about to reverse — is a second claim, and the quiet week often refuses it.
The range test
Put the doji next to the three days before it. Was its high-to-low range larger than those days, or smaller? If it is smaller, write “small session” beside the name and move on. A doji inside a pinched week is often just another small day that happened to close where it opened.
A doji after a steep run, with a range that sticks out from the days around it, earns a longer conversation. Even then the conversation is about indecision on that bar: buyers and sellers finished near the same price after a wider argument. The following bar is still unprinted.
Finer names, only when they are obvious
Dragonfly and gravestone are taught in the single-candle evening, and only when the wick is plain. If you need a magnifying glass to decide which shadow is the long one, keep the word doji and nothing finer. The room would rather have a plain correct name than a delicate wrong one.
The exercise we set for home is ten dojis from a chart you follow. Mark which ones pass the range test and which ones are only small. Bring both piles. The interesting argument is usually in the pile you were ready to throw away.
